Quilts by Ritta
A collection of five handmade quilts created by Henrietta (Ritta) Gardner, Rev. Matt’s wife. Despite most being over a century old, they have weathered the years quite well without substantial damage, as have the majority of the objects made by Ritta and Reverend Matt. The quilts, as with most handmade items throughout the homestead, are both utilitarian as well as aesthetically pleasing, incorporating decorative details such as the multicolored geometric patterns seen here. Ranging from the simple design of the small baby's blanket (Quilt 2) to the intricately complex multi-layered circular motif of Quilt 4, all five quilts display Ritta's skill with a needle and thread. In addition to their functional use, quilting also served as a way for Ritta to exhibit her own artistry and creativity. Quilting could also serve a community function, as women would come together to help piece and finish quilts as a social activity, particularly in the 20th century as quilting transformed into more of a pastime than a practical need.
